NVIDIA’s new GeForce RTX 5090D for China limits AI and cryptocurrency mining performance
The upcoming NVIDIA-exclusive GeForce RTX 5090D graphics card designed for China will have new restrictions applied to the RTX 4090D: stopping AI performance, and manipulating cryptocurrency performance.

The new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090D has been discussed on the Chiphell forums, with a “performance cut-off” in AI and coding-related applications, where after 3 seconds of sustained workload, the GPU will automatically lock its performance (by reducing the GPU clock speed). Or performance bottleneck through onboard software).
The power limits of the RTX 5090D are likely to be restrictive, making the RTX 5090D useless for professional workloads. NVIDIA’s new GeForce RTX 5090D will also be banned from any multi-GPU configurations, meaning that adding multiple RTX 5090D cards to the system won’t result in any performance benefits, unlike the RTX 4090D which can be stacked.
There will be no RTX 5090D AI clusters running in China – that’s for Windows – with Linux also affected, so there are no RTX 5090D multi-GPU setups possible on any OS.
The post on Chiphell explained: “The AI is a real 3s guy, it locks the computing power into the 3s for chemistry, the power consumption is locked, and you’re not allowed to pull it online. The default is what it is (not sure if the 5090D is on this Syntax or is the 5090 like this too). Video editing, gaming, AI repair, and the like have no effect.”
The post continues, adding: “Honestly, those who buy the 4090 as turbo cards won’t run on the 5090D. NVIDIA has completely blocked this multi-card operation, including the bottom layer of Linux (booting). Good news RTX the 5090D isn’t out of stock after the new year; The bad news is that the RTX 5090 is on the rise because the main consumer group is not those of us who play games, but those who do AI computing, so the 5090D is in “Their view is just a set of answers.”
