How Blockchain is changing aviation

It may sound like something out of a technology seminar, but blockchain technology is already changing aviation by enhancing safety, reducing costs and streamlining operations.

How is Blockchain technology changing aviation?

A good example is European Union Aviation Safety Agency(European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).) VIRTUA project, which ended in September 2024. This project looked at how blockchain could track aircraft parts from the moment they were manufactured until they were retired. This helps ensure that counterfeit parts do not enter the system and that airlines can keep up with strict regulations.

GE Aviation is also exploring the benefits of blockchain. They developed a system that records every part of the engine and tracks where and how the parts are used. This helps sell used parts, speeds up repairs, and ensures that only original parts can be manufactured into aircraft.

David Havera, blockchain expert at GE Aviation, explained:

“Blockchain technology increases the residual value by up to 50 percent of used parts materials, a faster resale process, ease of transportation, and improved productivity for moving assets.”

So far, this service has saved them millions of dollars and helped them solve major supply chain issues.

Looking forward

Airlines are now exploring how they can use blockchain technology to securely store passenger information to make check-in processes faster and more secure. It may also help manage frequent flyer programs or make cargo tracking more reliable.

But there are some challenges. Blockchain systems need to handle massive amounts of data and work well with legacy technology that already exists. Privacy is another issue, especially when dealing with passenger personal data. But early successes show that these problems can be solved.

For passengers, this technology could mean safer trips, fewer delays, and a smoother travel experience. It’s still early days, but blockchain technology has the potential to make flying easier and safer for everyone.
