Government shuts down mining at Portland Cement Company in East Africa
Kenya: The Ministry of Mining has ordered the closure of all mining operations at East African Portland Cement Company due to a $4 million debt the company owes to the government. The cement production company has also been accused of operating illegally since 2016, according to Citizen Digital. Its sites reportedly lack safety equipment, do not register vehicles transporting limestone and other violations. The police were sent to the company’s quarries to ensure that it stopped working.
Portland Cement Company East Africa operates quarries in Portland, Sparitec in Kajiado and Kipini in Sultan Hamoud.
