Losses from Cryptocurrency Hacks and Frauds Rise in 2024, Exceeding $3,010,000,000: Blockchain Security Firm

Losses from cryptocurrency hacks and scams rose in 2024, according to blockchain security firm PeckShield.

Despite a spike in cryptocurrency losses last year, 2024 was not as prolific as 2022, which recorded a loss of $3.6 billion.

The largest theft last year occurred in May when hackers from North Korea to steal More than $300 million worth of Bitcoin (Bitcoin) from the Japanese cryptocurrency exchange DMM.

US and Japanese government investigators say the breach began in March when a hacker posed as a recruiter and sent the malicious GitHub link to an employee at Ginco, a DMM partner company. After the employee copied the link to his personal account, a North Korean group known as “TraderTraitor” gained access to the system and later impersonated the worker to hack DMM communications.

The hackers then intercepted and modified a legitimate transaction request from the DMM, authorities said.

In December, blockchain security firm Chainalogy male North Korean hackers stole more cryptocurrencies in 2024 than in any previous year, looting $1.34 billion worth of digital assets across 47 incidents.
