Cryptocurrency scammers have finally found their counterpart thieves: themselves.
Cryptocurrency scammers have finally found their partner in the heist: themselves.
A new scam has gone viral mainly on YouTube, which could make even the most cunning scammers tip their hat, the security company says. Kaspersky said In last week’s security update.
“I have USDT stored in my wallet, and I have the seed phrase. How can I transfer my funds to another wallet?” Kaspersky noted one such comment. The selected wallet contains over $8,000 worth of stablecoins on the Tron blockchain. A phrase is a string of words whose knowledge grants access to a cryptocurrency wallet.
However, this question was not from a cryptocurrency newbie, but rather a cleverly set trap. These stablecoins are held in a multi-signature wallet, and theoretically require gas fees to be able to withdraw funds.
However, when the thieves attempted to steal funds by sending Tron’s TRX tokens to the wallet, the sent tokens mysteriously evaporated to another wallet controlled by the fraudsters.
What is important is that the bait wallet is set up as a multi-signature wallet. To allow outgoing transactions in such wallets, the consent of two or more people is required, so transferring USDT to a personal wallet will not work and will instead be transferred elsewhere.
“Scammers impersonate newbies foolishly sharing access to their cryptocurrency wallets, and trick equally gullible thieves – who end up becoming victims,” Kaspersky said. “In this scenario, the scammers are like digital Robin Hoods, with the scheme primarily targeting other fraudulent individuals.”
Kaspersky said this scam isn’t a lone wolf either, as several instances online are filled with similar comments from new accounts, all dangling from the same initial phrase.
As such, gas fees are typically cheap and cost less than $10 across most blockchain networks, meaning this activity is more likely targeted at wannabe thieves rather than being a sophisticated operation seeking to steal thousands, or even millions, of dollars.
But expect the cryptocurrency criminal to make money whenever he gets the chance.
